THE FREE COLUMN IDEA
Spaces are usually defined by their boundaries. But when Le Corbusier in his book “Towards A New Architecture” discussed what he thought were the five points of modern architecture, conceptions of how a space could be articulated was changed.
Walls were no longer solely responsible for the division of space, other elements like columns stepped into that role. The column can be seen as a way to create soft boundaries between spaces. Creating gradual transitions between spaces and blurring the lines between one area and the next.
Instead of creating a mere reactionary component that adapts to stimulus imposed on it, the Free Column is dynamic, exerting a force that is experienced by the other architectural elements around it. This project seeks to explore the nature of the Free Column and its position as the first new rule of contemporary architecture.
